Your Guide to Your Baby’s Brain Development
By Phillip Dye
Wondering what goes on inside the head of a baby? With this helpful guide, you can understand it a bit better.
A baby’s brain begins to develop shortly after conception, at the end of the third week after conception in fact. By the fifth week, synapses begin to grow. Meaning that the connections in the brain begin to develop.
A week after the synapses begin forming, it is possible for the fetus to move its entire body by flexing its whole body. By eight and ten weeks, it can move individual body parts thanks to the synapses that make it possible for the fetus to move.
By the start of week 12, the brain starts developing more rapidly than it had before. Neurons start multiplying at 250,000, then up to 500,000 neurons at a per minute rate.
This high level of multiplying will continue for the next 8 weeks lying ahead.. By the end of those amazing 8 weeks, the brain has attained its goal in mass, and requires no more multiplication of cells.
In fact the brain goes back and then it starts to target the cells that is no longer needed or used, and starts to kill off those cells. At the 7 month of pregnancy, the destruction of these cells are at epic proportions.
By the end of the 8th month, 40 to 70% of those cells the baby no longer needed have been destroyed by neuron weeding that occurs only after the brain has attained the desired mass.
As the birth of the baby approaches closer, those same synapses that were mentioned above that are related to the 5 senses, still are developing at a nonstop rate.
At the 12th week of gestation, the child’s sense of taste is getting more advanced and involved. By the 24th week, the (inner and outer)ears have reached their peak in development.
The eyes open and start to blink by the 26th week. The sense of touch that started just at the tender age of 7 weeks in gestation, begins to grow and spread through the baby’s body.
It grows from cheeks to groin by week 10, palms at week 11, the soles of feet at week 12, the abdomen and buttocks by week 17. By 32 weeks, the baby has senses all over its body. Meaning that it can feel pain, temperature, and pressure like a fully developed baby would.
To think that just 32 weeks prior, that one cell had multiplied to a full baby is amazing just within 32 week is a nothing else but a miracle. The brain of the child alone just has 200 billion cells, and that’s not counting the cells in the rest of the baby’s body. And the fact that it all starts with just one single cell alone, is truly amazing.
Though it still has 8 weeks to go before it would be considered as a full term baby, the brain is considered full term at least in the terms of neurologically.
To put this in more simple words, the baby’s brain is fully developed at 32 weeks. To think that this miracle of the human brain that takes 7 months to be fully developed, 2 months prior to the baby meeting its mommy and daddy is mind blowing.
The miracle of life is seen at best, with the development of the human baby.
So stop and take time to marvel is this plain and simple miracle.
